Film Viewing Practice Essay "Agent Carter"

The initial shots of the scene show two tight shots of both Captain America and Agent Carter. Both shots are necessary in order to demonstrate the intense feeling of despair that exists as Agent Carter realizes that Captain America will leave her. An additional tight shot appears when Agent Carter answers the phone on Agent Flynn’s desk. This tight shot reveals that Agent Carter is risking her position at Shield by answering and that her intentions of performing the mission is risky. A close shot (CS) of the men in the Shield office before heading to the bar is their attempt to display their dominance and ability to make mockery of Agent Carter who they believe is inferior to them.

We are able to see a sound bridge when the fight between Agent Carter and the enemies occur as the radio plays music and shots between the fight and the agent are continually showing cuts. A symbolic edit is apparent in the shot of the alarms going off in the office as Agent Carter is by herself and the red lights of the alarm starts to flash. Her face lit up by the red lights are symbolic of tenacity as she is fearless, which is why she answers the phone in the next shot. Simultaneity shot exists at the beginning of the scene as cross-cutting between Agent Carter and Captain America are placed to build suspense towards Captain America’s death. Obviously the two are in different locations as Agent Carter is in the flight room and Captain America in the falling plane but we are made certain that Captain America has no hope to survive the crash.

The non-diegetic sound that is eclipsed into the last seconds of the scene demonstrates an increasing pitch which heightens the suspense of Agent Carter disappearing from the camera’s view. The diegetic sound of the radio playing in the background is also important to the fighting scene that ensues. It provides a reason as to why the enemy sitting down is unaware to his partner’s being beat up and also supports the fight scene by giving it rhythm. Not to mention, the music being played through the radio helps set up the time era of classic mid-20th century where the radio was still popularly in use as well as the genre of music. Looking at sound perspective in reference to the radio, it clearly raises in volume inside of the building but immediately lowers once the two men step outside where Agent Carter is walking up to. Once the window blocking the noise from the radio is broken, the music is exhibits much higher volume making the viewer realize that the Agent Carter's actions are bold due to her disobedience and willingness to solo the multiple man mission.

The video starts off with a flashback to Captain America’s death and the setting eventually settles at the office of one of Shield’s agent assignment centers. The office lacks much space and only contains one main room where Agent Flynn, the head of the center, works. This office represents Agent Carter’s lack of mobility and action within Shield because of her superior’s refusal to assign her to missions. The costumes exhibited in the scene also hint at the time era as suits are commonplace and and tan-colored fedoras on the enemy demonstrate an older fashion worn after the World Wars.
