Mise-en-scene in Game of Thrones Season 6 Episode 10: The Winds of Winter
The setting of the episode is shown at the start of the episode as an establishing shot of the city is shown.
Clear sky is shown while the inside of Cersei’s castle has a darker tone used through lesser usage of light
perhaps to signify that Cersei is planning something sinister. Cersei’s positioning by the window
overlooking the Church reinforces the idea that Cersei is in the midst of causing a tragedy at the Church.

A lowkey lighting is applied right before and during the Grand Maester’s murder on the children committing
the execution. This application of lowkey lighting is important in order to signify an impending death
(in this case of the Grand Maester) and the dark upbringing of the new Grand Maester that uses illegal
practices in order to serve the evil Queen Cersei. Lowkey lighting is also used later in the episode in a
scene of Riverrun. The room is only lit by candles and shadows appear all over the scene and the viewer
vividly remembers the huge massacre that occurred in the same room. This causes the viewer to believe
that another dark event will take place soon within the room (of course Arya Stark slits the throat of Lord
Frey at the end of the episode in order to avenge her brother who died in the massacre).

The first scenes of the episode shows various individuals getting dressed for a trial at the Church such as
Margery Tyrell, leader of the High Sparrow, and young Tommen Baratheon. Margery wears a gown that
covers most of her body and demonstrates modesty as she wishes to finally relieve herself from the
imprisonment of the Sparrow after the trial. The High Sparrow dressed in rags and wears no jewelry
unlike the characters because he is an embodiment of the Church that does not focus itself on tangible
objects but rather enforcing a strict way of life that follows the rules set by the gods.

Deep space is shown as Cersei stares out of her window into the city with the church in focus. This
deep space represents her separation from the Church that she had initially supported. The High
Sparrow’s mockery of Cersei and the crown caused the rift between them to start to grow until Cersei
finally blows the church into oblivion with fire as her enemies resided within it.
